...And Justice For All: How Do I Make Difficult Decisions?

Throughout life every single individual must make problematic and arduous decisions that can affect their future drastically. When faced with these types of decisions, one can only think of several things. Firstly, a person could only begin to imagine the amount of happiness that both they and others would receive out of this decision. Secondly, they begin to think of the implications that making this decision would cause. As we go through life these decisions will continue to bombard us. However, the true question is how should we should come at these decision in an attempt to ensure the greatest outcome.
To begin, the amount of happiness of both an individual as well as others is very important. For example, the use of steroids in professional sports. As we know, the use of steroids is both frowned upon and against the rules of professional sports as it is considered to be "cheating". However, there is a major conflict when it comes to this subject. Utilitarianism would argue that by taking steroids an athlete can perform at a higher level than all the other athletes. Consequently, making both all the fans as well as many others very happy. However, Deontology would argue that consuming steroids is a morally atrocious deed and should not be done as it breaks several rules. Regarding my own decisions, I usually look towards what would be the considered the Utilitarian choice. I would chose with this side due to the fact that it would result in the most amount of happiness for everyone.
A rather difficult scenario would be the following. Imagine that there were five people with the same blood type that were all in desperate need of organ transplants. Coincidentally, there is a patient in the waiting room that is perfectly healthy and has the same blood type as the five people. Now, there is a very huge and conflicting predicament. Utilitarianism would argue for the one man who is healthy to give up his life and allow the five others to go and live their respective lives. Deontology would argue that this gentleman has the right to live his life. However, my personal decision would be to go towards the teachings of Mill and Bentham. By taking the life of one person, five other lives will be saved. Thereby creating the greatest possible outcome. Which is why I chose to side with Bentham and Mill, as in order for me to make a decision of a large magnitude I do need to think about the total amount of happiness that this choice would produce.
In conclusion, although both Deontology and Utilitarianism both have very convincing arguments for which side one should agree with, I cannot simply make a decision because it is the morally right thing to do. However, this is why I can make a decision based on the amount of happiness will come out of the choice I have made. Consequently, there are some people that when faced with a difficult choice have no idea to do. But, as Geddy Lee once said, “If you chose not to decide, you still have made a choice", and I believe we can all agree with that.

I really enjoyed reading your blog! I found it to be very well written and liked the vocabulary that you decided to use.
Your examples were also clear and easy to understand. I didn't quite realize if you consider yourself to be more of a utilitarian then a deontologist...I think that next time you should try and make your own personal opinions a bit more clear and develop them more! Other then that, I really liked your text! Good job.

  2. Your blog was very well written and you demonsrated a good knowledge of both theories. The examples that you gave were very effective because although you described both theories in each example, you made it clear that you are on the utilitarian side. However, you could of developed your position with more opinion and less theory.
    Good job!

  3. you are wrong again.. but i guess?.. mm.. maybe it's your right to be wrong because if everybody would be right like me then there would be no difference between us from this point of view so we wouldn't even discern what right or wrong means.. :-/

you heard of nadia comaneci?.. she was famous world wide.. it's so disgusting how corruption borns celebrities.. people who are viewed as national heroes...... or gabriela szabo?.. or Elena Antoci? Cristina Vasilescu? there are many more others. practically every romanian athlete who is a little known, surely used drugs. oh and i forgot - mutu the romanian footbal player he used drugs as well. so err?.. why do you agree with steroids? if you really agree then there should be different divisions - for players who use steroids or whatever, and for those who play clean. there's so many types of racing - some race on foot, others in cars, on motorcycles etc. if you'd be a sport player would you like to compete on foot against some dude on a bike?

and then you gave that example with those 5 guys who need blood. again i don't agree at all. the most basic instinct of any living thing is to survive ok? so what you're trying to do is to convert morality into materialism! so that guy is probably the most noble out of everybody, he has to sacrifice his life so that 5 others live. but.. do we know that all of those 5 people are AT LEAST or closely as noble as the guy who donates blood? because if they aren't, then the good guy dies and the 5 evil punks are alive. if the good guy would live, most likely he'd do more good. but now that the 5 evil sh!theads are alive, they do more evil.. so your morality or logic doesn't survive it even destroys itself! because those 5 evil dudes will NEVER waste a single drop of their blood even to save entire nations.. you're thinking in quantity not quality - that's why i said you're converting from morality to materialism. for you 5 > 1 but maybe that 1 guy has a soul bigger than all other 5 which you don't take into account.

  4. also there's another issue, that of transfering blood to another person. the bible says that you are not allowed to gain blood in your organism from any other living creature. you must drain its blood before you eat it. i'm not christian but i can't say i'm totally atheist either because i practice tarot so i believe something is out there which the majority can't perceive. years ago i also practiced 2 demon invocations and at the age of 9 i was?.. err?.. well ok i'll go ahead and say it - possessed.. it happened in a nightmare. in fact it started like a very beautiful dream but when i realised those thoughts of happyness simply aren't mine, they were like thoughts injected in my mind, everything changed. i was in this very dark place, i couldn't see anything at all except a source of very bright light. and at one point something came out of that light. i couldn't see it i just felt it coming. the more it got closer to me, the more i felt its twisted evil thoughts. finally it got so close to me that my mind started to?.. to mold with that other mind! its like my mind was pushed away and replaced with something else. i was very scared but little by little the fear transformed itself into a sadistic pleasure coming from that thing.. i also started to have bioenergy. at first i learned how to gather this energy then later i learned how to send these cold relaxing currents in different body parts. i can also send it outside my body by touching someone (it causes pain from what others told me) or something but it requires a little effort which makes me feel drained for a while. and i can't send energy in a single area - when i send it, i gather most of it in my right hand (with the left i extract or push it to the right hand) then i release it from all of my body not just right hand. anyway.. but err?.. after some years i regained my former self so those thoughts i had before, they dissapeared. but i still have bioenergy. and in order to gather it, i must err?.. well first i have to breathe deep. also if i move my body in a certain way, it helps. but the most important thing, i must put my mind in that "state". in that "feeling" when i was possessed. it's like you're calling that thing into you, and instantly you feel cold relaxing currents in all your body. i talked to another girl and well i can't be certain at all if she lied or was true because i never met her. but she said she has a different type of bioenergy and from what i read, indeed there appear to be many types. some people can use it to attract metallic objects - which i can't. but maybe you're not curious really about this. anyway so i also have strong reasons to believe that blood has a special significance and i would never donate my blood to anybody no matter how much you'd pay me. talking about this bioenergy, i noticed it travels best thru blood vessels i think. so if your hands are cold or something?.. if you tie tight a part of your body like a hand foot and blood doesn't run smooth and you try this biothing? it hurts.

and err?.. when i have an important day or a bigger decision to make?... i consult 4 trusted horoscopes and tarot.

one more thing - the background image for this forum is very dissapointing.. i seen that about 10 years ago, surely before 2004, a certain fashion appeared. that of black and red. i simply cannot suffer these colors put together. i tried to search on google for a study about this combination of colors but no luck. just like every color has its impact on your mood, black and red, i think they have a very bad effect. for example all cops dress in blue to make people calm. red has the opposite effect, i don't know maybe because i'm born in taurus i don't like these colors? but they're very disturbing to me. it's like the colors of the devil.. really repulsive
